[just when the Ruroni Kenshin song threatens to make his heart twist out of his chest, he recognises the Ghibli song almost immediately, and a sort of goofy smile jumps to his face instead. he must have watched that movie 6000 times with Chiyo, back when they were younger. it's been a while: they should watch it together again]
Probably because it sounds romantic...
[a huff, as if this is a feeling Rin can't relate to. what a bunch of bullshit; he's flushing a bit, happy with thoughts of spending time with his sister, happy with thoughts of the romantic movie, a couple dancing through the sky. Rin likes music because it's emotive, because it gives outlet to his feelings. he probably has something like over 100 playlists, to guide him through his high highs and low lows]
[Rin pulls a leg up on the computer chair, leaning against his knee as he listens]
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[he plays the song on loop for a bit longer, and then he speaks after about a minute]
There's a song I've been writing for a couple of years, but it's not really complete. There's more to it--like, I was thinking of adding guitar to it, and maybe some beats if I ever get the electric drums.
[don't mind him talking himself into stalling. but he's talking about instruments and the different sounds they could bring to the song, that surely it will come as a surprise when he says:]
I wrote the song in Japanese. I thought it fits better. Would you mind telling me what you think?
[besides, makoto has always been a poetry kind of boy, loving literature class a lot more than any other class.]
[he begins playing a few notes on the piano, leading up to a melody. and way before rin can stutter or complain or squawk indignantly, makoto's begun singing softly in sync with the piano notes, his eyes closed, moving his shoulders to the rhythm in his head he's managing to transmit onto tangible song]

Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[there's no stuttering or complaining, just Rin cocking his head obediently, to better listen. if this is something Makoto's been invested in, he'll gladly give feedback]
[but he isn't expecting the upbeat shift, which is maybe odd of him (wasn't Makoto always smiling?). he isn't expecting Makoto to sing, either, which he's never heard before -- and how had he been hiding that voice all this time? finally, he definitely isn't expecting the lyrics, more passionate than he's ever heard Makoto about anything not at buffet. it strikes him somewhere very tender, to hear the longing for togetherness, the longing for the future to come]
[he's a little frozen, listening, feeling, as Makoto plays, and wide red eyes are intent on Makoto's face, Makoto's hands, as he plays a song that fills his heart to what feels like bursting]
[it's a sight he's never seen before.]
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[his singing comes to an end along with the song on piano; he feels a little embarrassed, if he was to be honest, but the sing about making music and getting to sing--even if just with an audience of one--is that it makes him happy and confident despite his more timid personality.]
[so he smiles wide at rin, pulling back from the piano for a bit, stretching his legs]
...it's far from done, but it's the closest I've been since I first began writing it.
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[and Rin -- embarrassingly jumps out of his chair, actually, the thing spinning slightly on its wheels and bumping into Makoto's desk. before he can check himself, he grabs Makoto's hand in both of his, like he used to do when they were kids, and he got worked up about something]
Oi, what's with all this talent you've been hiding! It's amazing! It's really amazing, what you can do!
[and while Rin is typically overenthusiastic, it's about sports, and meat, and swimming -- but he just feels like he's seen something really special. maybe a side of Makoto he never noticed was there, that reminds him of what he was like in the water; confident, joyful, skillful. Rin wants to see more, already]
I can't imagine how good it's gonna be when you're done...
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[what's this? makoto feels his cheeks burning not because of rin holding his hand, rather by the outburst of praise--the kind of feedback makoto wasn't expecting. he knows he's got some talent for singing, but he didn't realise others outside of his family would consider it a 'hidden talent,' something 'amazing.']
...do you really think so?
[he coughs, his voice a little strained, and he takes his hand back to hide his flushed expression behind it]
Thank you. It's ... not something I'm advertising to everyone. [this is the first time he's sang in front of someone not his parents] I didn't think I was amazing or anything.

Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[though Makoto pulls his hand away, Rin doesn't retreat from Makoto's space just yet, still caught up in the moment, still caught up in the heart-longing of Makoto's music. he squares his hands on his hips, like he usually does when he's excited beside the pool]
It's definitely something special. Aren't you self-taught, too? That's even more incredible... you must be a natural.
[Rin's never been a natural at much, except himself, and some bad years have set him back at that too. it's admirable, to see one of those people show off their skills]
Is that the only song you've written? Are there more?

Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[he's still reeling from the praise (it feels warm; his heart is beating fast in excitement), and it's moving him to sit up again in front of the piano. he needs to calm down, first and foremost, which is why what comes out in song is a slower and softer melody, one he has played several times before.]
I practiced every day for years.
[it helps pull him back into taking things easy.]
I've done a lot more piano songs that ones with lyrics in them. [a pause as he focuses on the music] Like this one.
[and then he plays, quiet, until he ends the song on a long note.]
... [then, turning to rin] I have ideas for more, but I didn't think they'd be worth it to continue composing them.
Edited 2017-05-08 00:55 (UTC)
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[how overwhelmed Makoto looks finally hits Rin, and he tries to soften all his excited edges, hands falling into loose fists, voice lowering to match the gentle tune on the piano. as Makoto plays, Rin seats himself on the end of Makoto's bed, watching. that's the thing about hard work -- it makes something difficult appear natural. he shouldn't have jumped to conclusions, but it was just so sudden, to him]
[and even though he's trying to be less -- him -- he can't help responding (after another lovely song, even, jeez)]
Why the hell not? If they're as good as those two, if anything, you should compose twice as many.
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[makoto's eyes meet rin's, and there's something in there--like how much he loves hearing this from someone outside of his own thoughts. this is what he wants to do, rather than medicine or business.]
[it's been scary to constantly consider failure for himself on this matter.]
[which is why he quietly admits:] It's not something my parents will approve of.
[makoto tachibana, living under the constant pressure that being anything but what his parents want him to be will result in shame and dishonour to his family.]
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[it's not that Rin doesn't think parents are important. if anything, he knows exactly what it's like, to want the approval of a parent so much, even if just in spirit, that he'd give up anything (friends, fun, his home, his life)]
[so it follows that he's had more than one tearful conversation with his mother regarding the subject: would dad want me doing this? would he approve of the choices I've made? what did dad want me to be?]
[as expected of a Matsuoka, her answer was fairly straightforward, as is Rin's to Makoto]
Does it make you happy?
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[back to his electric piano, makoto dusts off the top where the buttons are. it's not that he has to consider the answer, but admitting to himself that it makes him happy makes him think that he's got to go along with it--to pursue that dream.]
[he's quiet throughout the song until the very end, and he speaks to the piano when he's done]
This one's yours. You're passionate about important things, confident, and you never lose sight of what you want even if you make mistakes along the way. You always go forward. I wanted to capture that bright energy in you.
[makoto starts playing from this point again, until the end. so rin can hear what he means. find himself in the song, the way makoto thinks he sees rin in it.]
[if it's bright energy Makoto sees in Rin, he'll see it fairly brimming back up from where Rin just tried to dampen it; the tide swells higher in Rin as the notes spiral up and around and always forward, like chasing something through a windstorm]
[it's beautiful, it's for him, and he loves it. but it's Makoto that needs his own music the most -- and as much as Rin wants to clap and cheer, and let the atmosphere of the room settle somewhere warm and comfortable, Makoto's got him pegged. he never loses sight of what he wants, and he moves ahead, always, ever forward]
[the last of those notes fade, and Rin's reaching out again, hand resting on the piano, not quite touching Makoto's still fingers]
Isn't that what parents want most, in the end?
[not all parents, maybe, but parents that love their kids -- and as strict as the Tachibanas have been, as much responsibility as they've loaded on their only child, Rin doesn't see a lack of love in this household. if anything, maybe too much of it, in both directions (and Rin can understand that, too)]
For you to be happy.
[a pause, and then:]
If I ask you write me another song, you'll keep composing, won't you?
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[his cousin has called it out before; the problem here is not that there's a lack of love in makoto's family, but rather miscommunication. makoto isn't particularly well-known for knowing how to express himself in a direct, straight-forward way. in the same way, he learnt that from someone, and his parents are the models he followed growing up.]
[makoto smiles at rin]
How many songs do you want, enough for an album?
[he snorts, feeling better--feeling lighter, his chest warm, with the tug to his wrist. but in turn, he puts his hands on rin's shoulders and makes the other sit back down again on the bed]
Hold on, listen to this one. I've been working on it for a while too.
[returning to the piano, makoto plays another, having found his confidence in playing.]
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[at that, Rin laughs, noisy and resounding as the previous notes]
Now you're just looking for compliments, oi... I definitely want vocals on my album, with a voice like that! [and although they typically speak in Japanese with each other, Rin cuts into abrupt English, to declare] I want the total package! [and back to Japanese] Got it, got it? So do your best, maestro.
[he leans back on his elbows on the bed, nodding as though he's said something profound. he hasn't, but confidence looks good on Makoto, and makes him feel lighter, too -- younger, stupider, sillier]
[it's energizing, to hear the harmony of someone's dreams]
Oi, what'd you stop for?
Edited 2017-05-08 03:18 (UTC)
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[and nods, taking rin seriously, and picking up again from where he stopped before. he's quiet and offers no commentary, so that rin can enjoy the song since he seems to like it a lot.]
[it's only when it reaches the end, that he wonders, determination in his voice despite the shyness in his body language]
...maybe I should use my YouTube channel to upload content after all?
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[while Makoto plays, Rin lets his eyes close, feels content -- soon he's not just leaning back on his shoulders, but flopped on the bed. his hands go behind his head and he's enjoying the music like he does in his own room, ear buds in. when it stops and Makoto speaks again, Rin only opens one eye at him, doesn't bother sitting up]
That's a great idea. You need a cool username, though -- what is it now?
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[makoto, for his part, grabs rin's foot by the ankle and pushes it down so it's not antagonising his knee any further. his smile is whimsical, considering, thinking...]
How about I play you the song I composed for you?
[diverting the topic? hell yeah]
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite

You'll laugh. MXKXT, basically. I couldn't think of anything else when I first made it.
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
[poor Makoto, Rin's face lights up in glee: it is truly an embarrassing goldmine he's just stumbled across]
Like some girl's J-Pop group -- !
Re: 5/3 sing us a song pianochan sing us a song 2nite
Look, I'm a big fan of Miyavi and his stylistic choices. I guess some of his cool vibes passed on to me when I was fourteen.
[a sheepish rub of his nose with a finger, but he's smiling nonetheless]
...I never thought too much about it.
